Now that HBO Max has launched with the hit NBC sitcom on its roster, plenty of fans will be compelled to rewatch and reminisce about its groundbreaking episodes , fan-favorite couples , iconic pieces of furniture — and, for some, its biggest flaws. In addition to some glaringly problematic story lines , “Friends” had issues with continuity that can be hard to ignore to this day, from petty details like characters having multiple different birthdays to major emotional moments getting little to no follow-through like Phoebe’s birth parents disappearing from her life without explanation.

Given that Monica’s building doesn’t have just one or two apartments per floor, it makes little sense for her rent-controlled sixth-floor walk-up to be apartment No. It appears that the production crew noticed the same thing, because her apartment becomes No. Ross is comfortably employed, Chandler makes a lot of money, and Monica’s apartment is rent-controlled because the lease is in her grandmother’s name.

But the show never explains how Phoebe is able to live on her own in Greenwich Village, a rather central and expensive area in Manhattan. Phoebe is a masseuse, but she bounces between working at different parlors and massaging her own clients at home as a freelancer. She’s even unemployed a few times after getting fired or getting her license suspended.

An episode on season two, “The One With Five Steaks and an Eggplant,” specifically focuses on Phoebe, Joey, and Rachel’s struggles with making less money than the other three.

‘Friends’: The Top 10 Ross Moments

Perhaps it was a sign of the times or a lack of self-awareness on the part of the writers, but many of the storylines, situations and characters on Friends were problematic. Storylines laced with homophobia, sexism, borderline emotional abuse and sexual harassment are portrayed as punchlines. The lack of diversity within its 10 seasons is inexcusable and embarrassing. Recently, Friends was added to Netflix in the UK, and millennials were astounded by the problematic elements that persisted for 10 seasons.

Rewatching our favourite shows of the Nineties and early Noughties often raises questions of how well certain programmes have aged. Sex And The City. The OC. They all exhibit scenes where beloved characters display casual homophobia, racism or general bigotry. To a certain extent, we can separate ourselves from this.

We can enjoy a series from the past without endorsing or accepting such behaviour as acceptable. But there are lines, and in revisiting Friends one truth seems undeniable. Ross Geller is the absolute worst. David Schwimmer, no question a talented comic actor, ran the gamut of slapstick and physical comedy, acted out grief, elation, mental breakdowns and moments of real tenderness. But he was also guilty of some pretty horrendous behaviour.

He seems to feel particularly humiliated by the fact that Carol has got together with a woman.

Friends Guest Star Alexandra Holden Recalls Being Told To Look ‘As Hot As Possible’ For Audition

Friends might have been about friendship, but it was also about dating. And, with the exception of Rachel Green , no other character dated or got married as much as Ross Geller. He is reluctant to go on the date because he knows that although it is not against policy, the university does frown upon professors dating students. Ross decides.

He periodically shows up throughout the series, continuing to pine after Phoebe. Eight seasons later, Phoebe sets Rachel up on an intentionally terrible blind date with the same friend who lost his restaurant because of a drug problem and now makes inappropriate T-shirts. Joey starts dating Erika Ford Shields , who thinks that Drake is real and she can see him through the magical box in her living room. The two start dating, but the relationship turns out to be a ruse for Susie to enact some lingering grade-school vengeance.

By Rhiannon-Skye Boden. Friends is one of the most popular shows in all of television history, and its arrival on Netflix has brought with it a whole new wave of commentary, analysis, and of course, Eighties Kids quizzes. Fans are conflicted about whether Ross is truly an awful person, or just a victim of circumstance, but this list should convince you once and for all that the geeky palaeontologist is definitely not worth your sympathy.

One of the biggest twists in the later seasons of Friends is the reveal that Joey has been harbouring serious feelings for Rachel, but is reluctant to do anything about it out of respect for Ross. That mini-arc ends with an uneasy truce, after Ross explodes with rage and Joey realises that pursuing anything with Rachel is a bad idea. What does Ross do? Immediately makes out with Charlie himself, after voicing the fact that he should probably talk to Joey first and then just… not doing that.

Even worse, when Ross finally finds out about Rachel and Joey, he still has the nerve to make things as uncomfortable as possible, and only starts acting like a reasonable person after a meltdown and historic hangover force him to. Every character makes a few off-colour jokes across the many seasons, which are probably just examples of the scripts being a product of their time, but only Ross has entire story arcs dedicated to his prejudice.

The most infuriating is when Ross and Rachel are interviewing potential babysitters for Emma, and find someone who could not be more qualified. Ross is super enthusiastic about hiring them — that is until they meet, and Ross discovers that the candidate is a man. Immediately, Ross throws insult after insult at poor Sandy, played by Freddie Prinze Jr, and even accuses him of being gay, despite the fact that this is essentially a job interview and he should be acting professionally.

He takes those hang-ups out on his son.

There is no Friends character more divisive than Ross. Even 25 years after the show first aired, the neurotic paleontologist is still the source of endless debate, the subject of listicles and think pieces that beg the question: Is Ross Geller the greatest or worst character on Friends? He loses his cool over a Thanksgiving leftover sandwich, dramatically calling it the only good thing going on in his life before his job forces him to take a sabbatical.

Most importantly, he hates ice cream! But Ross is also the most amusing character on the show, the whimsical loser who never really stood a chance at being the most beloved. His five friends would continuously smart-shame him for having a PhD, rolling their eyes at his mere mention of a dinosaur or mocking him for being a grammar nazi. Co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane specifically wrote the part with him in mind after he auditioned for another pilot of theirs called Couples. Before taking the role of Ross, Schwimmer was about to quit television.

We purposely left out his relationship milestones, focusing less on him saying the wrong name at the altar and more him on seeking revenge on a luxury hotel by stealing lightbulbs and overstocking on tampons.
